Best Tractor for a Rotavator

A rotavator is one of the most power-hungry implements on an Indian farm. Match the tractor to the working width, not the other way round.

The power rule

Budget roughly 8–10 HP of PTO power per foot of rotavator width. A 5-foot rotavator wants around 40–45 HP at the engine; a 7-foot rotavator wants 55–70 HP. Under-powering it means slower work, higher fuel burn per acre and a shorter gearbox life.

PTO speed and hydraulics

Confirm the tractor delivers a standard 540 PTO speed, and that its lifting capacity can carry the rotavator raised and full of soil — the loaded weight is well above the dry weight quoted in the brochure.

Low-range gears

Rotavating is slow work. Count the low-range speeds; a gearbox with too few of them forces you to compromise between engine speed and ground speed.
