Why "best" depends on your farm

The 35–50 HP band covers the majority of Indian holdings, which is why almost every manufacturer competes hardest there. Below 30 HP you are buying a machine for intercultivation and orchards; above 60 HP you are buying for contract work or very large holdings.

The four things that decide it

  • Widest implement you run. This sets the minimum PTO horsepower, and PTO horsepower is always lower than the engine figure.
  • Lifting capacity. Decides which mounted implements the tractor can actually carry, and it is where cheaper models cut corners.
  • 2WD or 4WD. 4WD costs more to buy and run, and earns it back only if you puddle paddy or work slopes.
  • Service network. A tractor with a workshop in your district is worth more than one with a slightly better spec sheet and no support.

What to ignore

Headline horsepower on its own, and cab styling. Neither pulls an implement.
