How to Begin a Goat Farming Enterprise

The first question is how to start a goat farming business. So, if you want to begin, we recommend that you begin on a small scale at first. You can begin with 10 goats and one goat. Following that, the number of goats can be increased to 20. In this manner, you can begin this business with one goat on 20 goats and two goats on 40 goats. You can also seek assistance from the government in this regard. In Rajasthan and Bihar, financial help is also provided through the goat rearing initiative. Not only that, but you can also get a bank loan for your business.

How do I select a breed for goat farming?

Before you begin a goat farming business, you must first decide whether you want to raise goats for milk or meat. Only after that should you decide the breed of goat you want to raise. Alpine, Sonnen, Nubian, Lamancha, Toggenberg, and Oberhasli milking goats are the best to raise for milk. Bore, Beetle, Fanting, Keeko, Somali, and Napoletana are the greatest meat goat breeds, whereas Bore, Beetle, Fanting, Somali, and Napoletana are the best dairy goat breeds. Aside from that, you can select your state's native breed.

Goat Farming Business Cost

50 goats and two goats are considered one unit. Opening a goat farm for one unit of goat farming might cost up to 8 lakh rupees per year. However, if the goats are taken to the forest for grazing, the cost can be reduced. Be advised that a goat's diet is not expensive. The goat survives by eating little plant leaves. However, if you want to do this as a business, you may have to spend around 8 lakh rupees per year on the upkeep, care, and food of a single unit.

How much financial support (the goat farming subsidy) is available for goat farming businesses?

The government provides subsidies for goat farming businesses. When it comes to the government of Bihar, the government of Bihar gives a subsidy for goat rearing. The projected cost of 20 goats plus 2 has been determined by the government at Rs 2.05 lakh, on which the government provides a subsidy of up to 60% to SC and ST persons. The general group, on the other hand, receives a 50% subsidy. In such a case, the beneficiary is only required to invest 40 to 50 percent of his own money.

How much bank financing is available for a goat farming business?

If you take out a bank loan for your goat-growing business, you can borrow up to Rs 4 lakh under the central government's scheme. If you take out a loan from IDBI Bank, you can acquire a loan ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 50 lakh for this task. However, you must first create a project and present it to the banks. After the project is completed, your loan is approved, and the loan amount is transferred to your goat farming account.

Which banks lend money for goat farming?

Many Indian banks, including the State Bank of India, IDBI, Canara Bank, Regional Rural Bank, Commercial Bank, State Bank for Agriculture Cooperation and Rural Development, Urban Bank, and others, provide loans for goat farming.

What should the goat home look like?

The goat home or goat enclosure is said to be more spread out in the east-west direction, although you can make it open to your liking. In general, the height of the wall along the length of the enclosure should be one metre, with a mesh of 40 x 60 square feet above that. The enclosure's floor should be rough and sandy so that the goat can walk freely. To keep the goats disease-free, the enclosure should be sprayed with lime on a regular basis. Both the goat and the lamb should be kept apart after one week of birth.

Goat Diet/Feeds

The volume of milk given by the goat and its weight are critical for the growth of the goat farming enterprise. It is vital to take care of the goat's food for this. What should be provided to the goat so that both its milk supply and weight can be improved? Thus, we will tell you what should be fed daily based on the weight of the goat.

  • A typical milch goat requires 3.5 to 5 kg of feed each day. This fodder should contain at least one kilogramme of dry fodder and two to three kilogrammes of green fodder (pulse grass).
  • Daily feed the goat one to three kilogrammes of green fodder, half to one kilogramme of husk, and one and a half to four hundred grammes of grain.
  • The feed should be composed of 60 percent crushed grain, 15 percent bran, 15 percent cake, 2% mineral elements, and 1% salt.
  • If the goats are not brought to pasture, they should be fed three times a day: in the morning, midday, and evening.
  • Give goats as much grain as they can eat at one time.
  • Do not feed the goat whole grains or mustard cake.

Goat House Care

  • Goats must be protected from excessive heat and cold. Make a shed for it.
  • The goat's house, i.e., the shed, should be cleaned on a regular basis.
  • Slaked lime should be sprinkled inside and outside the enclosure once or twice a week.
  • Every three to four months, the soil of the enclosures should be removed by digging at least six inches and replaced with new soil. This drastically minimises the likelihood of the illness spreading.
  • If you purchase a new animal, keep it separate from the existing herd for 21 days so that any defects or diseases in that animal can be recognised.

Vaccinate goats to prevent disease (Vaccination of Goats).

  • You must also protect your goats from infections if you want your goat farming business to thrive. To prevent diseases, goats must be vaccinated on a regular basis. The vaccines given to goats are as follows:
  • Goats must be immunised against PPR, E. coli, scabies, diphtheria, and smallpox. These immunisations are administered to lambs between the ages of 3 and 4 months.
  • Anti-parasitic medications should be administered to goats twice a year to kill stomach worms.
  • Giving the baby lamb goat its first milk within half an hour boosts its immunity. As a result, they are immune to illness.
