Animal Insurance Scheme: Ensuring the welfare of their animals is the greatest challenge for animal farmers during the summer. An initiative to address this issue was recently initiated in Kerala. On the basis of the Heat Index, the Ernakulam Regional Cooperative Milk Producers Union (ERCMPU) has initiated the Pashu Bima Yojana programme.
A total of 25,000 animals will be granted insurance coverage through the Animal Insurance Scheme.
Beneficiaries of the Animal Insurance Scheme (Pashu Bima Yojana) will be cultivators in the Kerala districts of Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Idukki. Cooperative societies are affiliated with the majority of producers in these regions, and there are approximately one thousand active dairy cooperative societies in these districts at present. The Ernakulam Regional Cooperative Milk Producers Union (ERCMPU) has initiated this heat-index-based scheme in consideration of the escalating temperatures; as a result, approximately 25,000 animals in these regions will be eligible for insurance coverage.
What will the premium for insurance be under the scheme?
In accordance with the Animal Insurance Scheme, farmers and cattle rearers in Kerala will be required to pay an estimated insurance premium of Rs 99 per animal. The beneficiaries will contribute Rs 49 to this programme, while the regional cooperative societies will contribute Rs 50.
How much will the farmers of Kerala receive?
The Animal Insurance Scheme will allocate insurance coverage to animal farmers residing in various regions of Kerala, with the quantity determined by the temperature range. Cattle herders will be compensated the following amounts: Rs 140, Rs 440, Rs 900, and Rs 2,000, if the temperature in a district remains elevated for 6, 8, 10, or 25 consecutive days.
Claims for coverage under an animal insurance plan
Animal farmers receive varying insurance claim amounts for various species under this programme. Consider such as:
- For the bovine, an insurance claim of up to Rs 83,000 will be available.
- The buffalo may be subject to an insurance claim in the amount of Rs 88,000.
- For cargo animals, an insurance claim of up to Rs 50,000 will be available.
- For goats and sheep, an insurance claim of up to Rs 10,000 may be filed.
- For rabbits and pigs, insurance claims of up to Rs 10,000 will be acceptable.
