Ahead of the 2026 Kharif season, Uttar Pradesh government has announced a massive aid package for farmers. The state government is now offering certified seeds to farmers free of cost and at subsidised prices to tackle the rising cost of farming and unavailability of quality seeds in time . Under this initiative, seeds of coarse grains, pulses and oilseeds would be supplied to farmers for increasing production and improving their revenue.

The government said that if farmers used good quality seeds at the correct time, agricultural production could be substantially raised. For this purpose, “Millets Revival” and “Free Pulse-Oilseed Seed Minikit” programmes have been launched. Under these plans farmers will be provided minikits free of cost and subsidies up to 50 per cent.

Which seeds will be profitable

Several crops have been brought under this system by the government. These include pulses, coarse grains and oilseeds. Benefits will be granted to farmers in numerous categories. Free of cost seed minikits of millet crops such jowar, ragi, bajra, savanna and kodo will be given. Free distribution of seeds of crops like arhar, mung , urad and sesame will also be done. The government is trying to promote the farming of coarse grains by the farmers. Their demand in the market is rising quite fast. Moreover, these crops can give good yields even with less water. 

Subsidy on seeds to the extent of 50 per cent will be available

For several other crops, farmers will get up to 50 per cent subsidy on seeds. These are dhaincha, paddy, pigeon pea, green gram, black gram and hybrid seed. Subsidies will also be available for hybrid rice, maize, sorghum and millet seeds. This will decrease the need for the farmers to buy pricey seeds from the market and will also cut initial cost of cultivation. 

How will the seeds on subsidies be chosen?

The government has introduced e-lottery system to make the plan transparent. Farmers will first register online on the official portal and apply for seeds. Applications received will thereafter be included into an e-lottery draw. Selected farmers will be intimated through SMS on their mobile numbers. This will ease the entire procedure and save the farmers from the trouble of visiting offices. 

Where will farmers acquire seeds at a subsidised rate?

Selected farmers will have to collect the seeds from the state agricultural seed storage in their development block or block. There, the farmer will have to authenticate himself by putting his thumb impression on a P.O.S. machine. After verification, the farmer will be provided with the seeds. This has been done to ensure that the rewards go exclusively to the eligible farmers and to avoid any irregularities.
